Reeling under the scourge of insurance profiteering

Reeling under the scourge of insurance profiteering

A few years ago during a heated online exchange on a political discussion board, a rightwing Tea Party activist exuding a maximum degree of bravado made it clear to me that I along with everyone else of my ilk and even his was NOT, repeat NOT entitled to an income!  I replied to the guy “Okay” and he proceeded to excoriate his perceived tyranny of mandating everyone buy their own health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, the passage of which was pending in the Congress.  I thought about that specific assertion regarding income and entitlement and after mulling it over a bit I actually found myself in agreement.  There is nothing in the Constitution, U.S. or state, that directly entitles any citizen to a set level of compensation for goods or...

An embarrassment of riches with even more embarrassing results

An embarrassment of riches with even more embarrassing results

This time a year ago we were flying down the home stretch of what turned out to be a wave election.  In the wee morning hours of Election Night, the GOP candidate ultimately won the Electoral College vote count for the Presidency and his party made substantial gains in a wave that extended far down ticket.  Not only did the GOP candidate win, the Congressional GOP resoundingly reaffirmed their majorities in both bodies on Capitol Hill.  It most certainly was a wave election here in Oklahoma.  The OK GOP outright won more contested legislative seats, many with very lopsided numbers against very good candidates, than most can recall in the history of the state.  When the 56th Oklahoma Legislature was sworn in back in January, the OK GOP held 76 out of 101 seats in...

Slowing down the forced march backwards

Slowing down the forced march backwards

What a week it has been in *President Trump’s America.  Is anyone tired of winning yet?  Never before in my lifetime have I seen a chief executive of any organization let alone the defacto leader of the free world (a position which the United States is apparently abdicating) so self-absorbed by the fact he won one election that it has become the only thing that matters.  I’m sure that feeling of accomplishment is something that few things can ever match but there is also the small matter of actual doing what you were elected to do, you know, govern the nation.  The *45th President is still so immersed in campaign mode that he seems to have foregone the time between election cycles and launched into his bid for reelection.  It seems that with so many...

Repeal of Affordable Care Act is failing!

Repeal of Affordable Care Act is failing!

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka The Affordable Care Act will remain the law of land after the primary legislative aim of the GOP-controlled Congress to repeal it failed to gain enough support for passage in the U.S. Senate on Monday evening.  President Barack Obama signed the ACA into law in March of 2010 and the GOP majority in the House has in vain held votes to repeal it ever since.  After ramrodding their repeal of the ACA through the House in May, the GOP replacement for it effectively failed muster in the Senate on Monday evening.  This is a huge defeat for GOP majority and for President Trump with the defection of two more GOP senators. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has failed to get the required 50 votes to pass the bill.  The...

We are not OK

We are not OK

Life seems to have been toeing the line of the surreal for the past couple weeks while events, local and national, happen in real time and evolve over a period of days.  This past week there was a candidate forum for those running for Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party where four of the five candidates attended.  We Oklahoma Democrats will be electing a new chair next Saturday at our state convention in Oklahoma City.  Regardless of who wins the privilege to become the new face of the ODP, they will be met with a tall order to recruit Democratic legislative and state office candidates who have the wherewithal of character, wisdom and resolve to address the litany of problems which beset our state government.  It seems inadequate to even state for the record...

One hundred days of lunacy

One hundred days of lunacy

A couple of weeks after winning the November General Election, the then President-elect delivered a speech to the nation detailing his bold plan for this first 100 days: Policy Plan for the First 100 Days Any non-Fox “News” journalist, ie, any reality based media person who is not a cheerleader for the current regime and is capable of reporting unvarnished real world first person facts will paint a much different picture than the 45th President’s alternate reality highlights.  Admittedly, Keith Olbermann is one of the guy’s more caustic critics and pulls no punches: The Resistance with Keith Olbermann on the First 100 Days For all the grief President Obama’s detractors spewed over the his alleged overindulgence in perfecting his golf...
