As America enters the fourth week of the longest U.S. government shutdown in history, any humor or levity that may have taken the edge off heretofore has long since evaporated. Those with the means to end this shutdown are, via their intransigence, beginning to do some very real harm to very many real people who depend on government not only for their livelihood but also for their personal protection not only from the very things they have been told to fear but from many things they had no idea are done on their behalf to safeguard them. The incumbent administration has been called a lot of things by a lot of people but one often used visual has certainly earned its place in the collective psyche.
Make no mistake about it, this shutdown is an ego-driven political stunt which caters directly to this *President’s base supporters. In his mind it is holding fast to an oft repeated campaign promise to build a wall and make another nation pay for it, which is a notion as ill-conceived as any idea ever was. Forget about the fact that the *President’s immigration numbers and the threat terrorists pose on our Southern Border ranges from over-inflated to outright fictitious. Forget about the fact that most of the rest of then nation is opposed to any such construction on any border, particularly those living on the Southern Border. In the eyes of his unconditional supporters he cannot possibly do any wrong, not even shutting down the government for all the wrong reasons despite the harm it may be doing even to themselves. This is a central dynamic responsible for the decline of Red State America and Red District Oklahoma where success of elected Republicans is measured by how much pain and suffering they are able to inflict on those they dislike. Simply stated, this *President’s base would rather have the house burn down around them than make any attempt to put out the fire.
In the runup to the 2016 General Election, I vividly recall more than a couple social media friends, both current and some now former, who were posting open queries in their feed as to why they should vote for Candidate Hillary Clinton. What they were really doing was attempting to compile as many reasons as they could to not vote for the only candidate on the ballot that had a service record worthy of serving in the most powerful elected office on the planet. I also recall my reply to these queries. They were along the lines of the following:
“Hillary Clinton, for all her polarizing faults, is at the end of the day a seasoned public servant. If the GOP candidate is able to shoot the moon and pull off a victory on Election Night, a year from now I will be able to show you a lot better than I can tell you.”—Route66Kid
We need to firmly keep in mind that the ELECTORATE is to blame for the current incompetence and stupidity taking place in the federal government… and in all the Red States, as well. Sour grapes about the Electoral College to one side, the numbers of citizens who are completely unable to recognize their own best political interests have grown to the point where the system is now breaking down in large chunks… and that is not likely to change for the better anytime soon.
If you ever were of the opinion that the federal government could be trusted to look out for the general welfare of the nation, you had better think twice about that, from here on out… and I don’t just mean during the rest of Drumpf’s term in office, either. As long as the electorate continues to be so dense about which side their bread is buttered on, we are going to continue to have a dis-functional government in this country.
And that means you better start looking out for your OWN welfare, because the government is not going to.
One of the major things this ‘shutdown’ has pointed out in spades, is exactly how many people are living paycheck-to-paycheck in this country – and I don’t mean sharecroppers deep in the heart of Dixie, or burger-flippers in Trenton NJ, I’m talking about >federal bureaucrats< who are purportedly some of the highest-paid jobholders in the country.
When those workers are at risk of having their electricity shut off or losing their homes simply because that bi-monthly or monthly paycheck doesn't arrive exactly on time, then economically you know something is badly out of whack…
And don't kid yourself – all the ongoing wild gyrations in the stock markets are telling you the same exact thing. None of these Trump-ites who are supposedly 'in charge' have a damned clue about what they are doing…
And in that regard, they are just like the voters who put them into the offices they now hold, from Drumpf on down – because an incompetent electorate invariably leads to an incompetent government.
I don’t know about anyone else but I haven’t been surprised by anything that has transpired since he was elected. Not his incompetence, his ignorance, his fealty to Putin and other autocrats, his followers undying adoration, nor the complete abdication of the responsibility to govern by the GOP congress.
It has always been clear this man is compromised and is an active asset of the Russian government; recent revelations have solidified this fact. He sees them as part of his base of support. I believe this shutdown may be part of a plan to further destabilize America, opening the door to “emergency” orders to enact his agenda. Neither Trump nor his GOP minions have any interest in protecting democracy; they’re focused on one party rule and absolute power.
Is there anything that will force the GOP Senate to come to their senses and act like a co-equal branch of government and end this shutdown lunacy? Sadly I have no idea.
