Author: Route66Kid

I am the Route 66 Kid! I was born and grew up within a block of Old Route 66 as it passes through what is now known as Midtown Tulsa, OK. I either walked, crossed or attended school along that segment of the Mother Road every day of the World as a youth. I served in the U.S. Navy at each end of America's Main Street at Port Hueneme, CA about an hour from its western terminus in Santa Monica and later at Great Lakes, IL about forty minutes from its eastern terminus in Chicago. I also lived along Old Route 66 while attending college in Oklahoma City. Driving the new ultramodern Interstates that parallel the Old Route, I became familiar with most of the roadside attractions of the dear old Mother Road on numerous treks back and forth from duty stations to home. I currently reside in my hometown and travel those ultramodern Interstates to work in Route 66 towns such at Vinita and Oklahoma City. With rare exception I have kept a personal daily journal since I was in high school. It will soon be in its 41st volume. This blog is an extension of that record. Thank you for stopping in!

Embracing the right to not get shot

The Constitution of the United States is a beautiful document not so much for its literary elegance but more for the ideals it embodies.  In short it is the heart, soul and character of a grand experiment that is still in progress.  As the next election cycle heats up it seems that there are a…

Conservatism’s not-so-finest hour

Posted on 10/01/201510/05/2022 by Route66Kid

It has been a week and a few days of heavy news much of which is still evolving which accounts for such a tardy post on the subject.  Yes, it has been a time of a Papal visit to America and of a Presidential candidate’s visit to Oklahoma, and of the resignation of the third office in line to the Presidency. …

Movie review: The Stanford Prison Experiment

You only deserve as much abuse as you are willing to tolerate.  That has become one of my personal credos over the years.  Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez validated this for me once again in his docudrama The Stanford Prison Experiment.  I attended a matinee showing of this film at Circle Cinema in Whittier Square this…

The decline of the fourth estate

It has been another exciting week along this the most conservative stretch of Old Route 66.  One historic date that passed nearly unnoticed was the 228th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution which was Thursday, September 17th.  I realize I refer to the Constitution often as so many topics I write about somehow relate to…

Sooner Road Warriors!

As an OU alumnus as well as a dedicated fan and follower of Sooner Football, I have had my concerns about the coaching leadership of Bob Stoops and the program since their epic collapse last season.  Honestly, Bedlam 2014 in Norman was a terrible sight for a sober fan (and not much better for the tipsy ones) as our beloved…

Winning blue in a sea of red

It was an eventful week along this, the most conservative stretch of Old Route 66.  There was a special election in House District 85 (NW Oklahoma City) to replace the late David Dank who sadly passed away earlier this year.  This particular district has been a GOP bastion since its formation over fifty years ago.  Indeed, this district…

Honoring the generators of all wealth

History tends to be cyclical.  It is true that the more things change the more they stay the same.  Of the issues which confronted the nation’s working people one hundred years ago, many still are relevant despite the many times the World has turned over since.  One hundred years ago the fight for the rights…

The legacy of absolute victory

It was on this day seventy years ago aboard the Seventh Fleet flag ship USS Missouri (BB-63) at anchor in Tokyo Bay that the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific Theater, General Douglas MacArthur, directed the diplomatic representatives of the Empire of Japan to sign the official instrument of surrender.  This event marked the…

$15 an hour toward income equality

Posted on 08/29/201510/05/2022 by Route66Kid

For all the bluster and over-the-top campaign rhetoric choking the cable news and radio talk shows this past week, one national organization took a huge step to seriously offer a means to rectify the national crisis of income inequality.  Yes, the Democratic Party passed an amendment to its platform calling for a $15 an hour…

The appeal of a narcissist

The 2016 Presidential campaign is beginning to take shape and those in the political pundit class are formulating their opinions.  This is something Yours Truly has been following as you might guess.  This past week it was noted by many that the campaign of multi-billionaire Donald Trump has, by any reasonable assessment, reached critical mass.  It matters not how annoyed…
