Just like that, earlier this month RRS celebrated its fifth anniversary of offering liberal news and views from the Mother Road’s most conservative stretch. Due to a larger endeavor taken on by Yours Truly, postings have declined considerably in 2019 and that trend will continue for the foreseeable future. That by no means should be taken as a declaration of abandonment or discontinuation of this space on the World Wide Web. The same as it applies to that aforementioned greater endeavor, just because we are not making any noise or generating a lot of attention does not mean we are doing nothing. As was explained in a post this past September, this is a marathon run. Rest assured, RRS will not go the way of so many other Mother Road establishments have sadly gone this year.
Regular readers may remember the story of the origins of Reason Rest Stop. In the summer of 2008, in the heat of a Presidential campaign year, Yours Truly became a blogger in the service of American Democracy. The forerunner of this blog was a personal publication on DelphiForums.com by the name of Option Left. A challenge was made to self to blog daily for one year. That challenge was met and exceeded by a couple of months. As other issues began to demand more attention and greater focus, daily blogging fell by the wayside. The idea for a local publication providing a liberal viewpoint on all issues remained in the conceptual phase for a few years.
It was not until late November of 2014 that the idea of a publication providing “Liberal news and views from the Mother Road’s most Conservative stretch” came to fruition with the tech support assistance of one Mr. Steven Copley. It wasn’t until the following month that regular posts became routine. Since then there has been at least one post per month on RRS along with the collection of a modest following.
Blogging seems a natural extension of daily journal keeping. It is demanding in its own way in that it requires a certain level of self discipline. This is especially true for a person who is not a professional writer or who lacks a background in producing written works within the confines of a deadline in order to receive a paycheck. It is a wonderful exercise in organizing one’s thoughts and presenting them in a way that is easily absorbed and digested by the average reader. That said, there have been many good blogs with intriguing motifs that began with so much promise then all but went away after three or four posts. At the 230 post mark, RRS most certainly does not number among them.
The criteria for a routine becoming a tradition is flexible depending on the popularity of the product. As alluded to above, RRS has gathered a modest core readership since its beginning. Given the fluidity of change in online media sources, news outlets and personal communication modalities, this blog has thus far survived. Duly note that Reason Rest Stop will remain a fixture in this corner of the blogosphere serving a locality that badly needs its viewpoint.
