Tonight was the night. Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1 A of the Bylaws of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, precinct organizational meetings were held at 7 PM this evening. I was proud to attend the designated meeting place for my south Tulsa precinct along with two dozen or so other enthusiastic Democrats. This meeting place was designated for members of some 25 precincts to elect officers, city committee men and women, discuss resolutions pertinent to the local county party and plan for the upcoming Tulsa County Democratic Party Convention on Saturday, April 11th.
Aside from sharing a few thoughts in an open forum of like-minded people, not a lot was done besides electing precinct officers. I did get one opportunity to wish out loud that we could get through one week without our beloved state being a national laughingstock. I did once again manage to get elected as the Chairman of my precinct! I haven’t seen the numbers of how the voter registration breaks down in this particular precinct but in the last precinct in which I served as Chairman we Dems were outnumbered around 4 1/2 to 1.
The main event of the evening however was the planting of grass seed. All grass roots political movements begin at the precinct level. Though we may not now be a majority, the Oklahoma Democratic Party is alive and a viable alternative to the party in charge. All anyone has to do to effect change in government is VOTE!
That 4 1/2 to 1 ratio was in Precinct 175, my old precinct. I am now Chair of Precinct 163. I do know the ratio is still not in our favor but there seems to be more Dems here than 175. I have been out knocking doors for candidates here since 2012. We have our fair share of GOP and Tea Party types. After all, I live behind Tulsa County GOP HQ.
I too was appointed as chairman of my precinct. I have already been asking around for the list of registered democrats in “the fighting 56th”.
We need to do something about that ratio. No wonder we are such a red state. When I get my list, I plan to make a goal to increase the size of the list, and improve on that ratio during this cycle.
Congratulations and I look forward to seeing you at the conventions!
